Do you find peace in quiet?
I do.
It can be a challenge at times to find quiet though.
The tv seems to be my greatest adversary when searching for quiet away from home.
It's rare to find a restaurant that doesn't have a tv that can be seen and heard from every table in the room.
I prefer the sound of my family's or my friends' voices to the sound of a blaring tv.
I don't think we should have to raise our voices to enable us to hear each other above the tv's noise while enjoying a meal together.
And even if I'm dining alone, I much prefer my own company to the tv's. It's quite often loud and rude.
Rare too, is the doctor's or dentist's waiting room with no tv on the wall.
I prefer to choose my own entertainment.
I like to see magazines on the table.
I can choose the magazine I want to look at.
Or I can choose to not look at a magazine at all.
I can bring my book along from home to enjoy without the interrupting sounds of the tv voices.
Who says I want to watch the tv program someone else chose for me this day?
I sometimes envy my husband's talent of focusing on only one thing at a time.
If I could do that then I could tune out the tv and focus only on the words in my book.
I often crave quiet.
Quiet is usually easy to find at home.
I can take a seat in one of the rockers on my front porch and I'm immediately greeted with quiet, and peace soon follows.
On this cool Fall morning there were few sounds to be heard while watering my front porch flowers.
And all the sounds I heard were welcomed; birds singing, a soft rain falling, a little breeze stirring while helping a few leaves to the ground that they have begun to carpet.
Sometimes quiet is even hard to be found in places where you most expect it; church for instance.
I know my likes are probably considered old-fashioned but I still enjoy a quiet, reverent atmosphere to worship in. That doesn't mean I think there should never be upbeat, excited music and speaking in church. But I also crave a little time set aside for quiet worship. We are usually blessed both ways in our little church. I have to admit though that my soul usually feels more refreshed and fed by the quiet time.

What about you?

... I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have stilled and quieted my soul...
~ Psalm 131:1-2 ~
